Directed by Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane, Kinky Boots), the film imagines one evening of whimsy the Queen has confessed to taking in May of 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced that the war in Europe was over. In celebration, the English masses flooded the streets and Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret convinced their parents (played in the film by Rupert Everett and Emily Watson) to let them take part in the spontaneous festivities—albeit incognito and accompanied by a protective coterie of 16.

Of her VE Day adventure, the Queen has said, “We cheered the king and queen on the balcony and then walked miles through the street. I remember lines of unknown people linking arms and walking down Whitehall, all of us just swept along on a tide of happiness and relief.”

Queen Elizabeth added that she was so scared of being recognized that she wore her Grenadier Guards uniform and pulled her cap down over her eyes. According to People, “a Grenadier Guards officer that was part of her 16-person party made [her push] her hat back up as he ‘refused to be seen in the company of another officer improperly dressed.’ ”
